Pre-Emergent Weedkiller Time at Hand

Henbit

(As seen as a Garden Tip on my Facebook page earlier this week)

Facebook Garden Tip for August 23
FIRST NOTICE!!! To prevent germination of annual bluegrass, rescuegrass, ryegrass and other winter weeds from your lawn, apply Dimension or Team between September 5-15. MISS THOSE DATES, and you'll have the weeds – no second chance. Apply Gallery then to prevent henbit, clover, dandelions, chickweed and other winter broadleafed weeds.

I'll be posting a couple more reminders before the time runs out, but the critical message is that your time to apply these pre-emergent products will be here before you know it.

Other considerations:
• You cannot apply these products at the same time, but you can certainly apply them one after the other on the same day.

• If you intend both to fertilize your lawn and apply pre-emergent granules, do the feeding first, then water the fertilizer in deeply. Wait a couple of days, then apply the pre-emergent weedkiller, and water lightly (5-10 minutes) to disperse it across the soil's surface.

• You cannot apply pre-emergent weedkillers if you intend to overseed your lawn with ryegrass, and you should not apply them to new lawns that have not yet gone through at least one winter.

• Pre-emergent weedkillers will also stop the germination of wildflower seeds.

• Pre-emergent weedkillers have no effect on established, growing plants (including weeds), and to that end, they will have no bad effects on trees and shrubs.
