Volume 10, Issue 11

November, 2014

November is our last chance for many gardening activities, yet the weather is still going to be good enough much of the time for us to get outside and enjoy every minute. In this issue, we have a great collection of projects, events, places and plants, and we hope you'll find this wrap-up to Growing Season 2014 helpful. If you do, please be sure to pass it along to other gardeners you know. We have great plans for 2015, and you'll get them in from the start.

Timely Tips

Timing is everything when it comes to November gardening. Neil's new book has the complete list in his 48-page Chapter 2, month-by-month gardening activities. However, he's assembled the most critical among them right here.

Native Son

Forget spring fever! Our native son gets autumn fever. Take a minute to enjoy Steven Chamblee's pictures and article about loving this season of the year.

Plant of the Month

If it's fall, there are bound to be Johnny jump ups in a flowerbed near you! This month Jenny Wegley tells us which new Viola hybrid is making a splash at the Dallas Arboretum.

From the Sperry Gardens

It's time to move the tender tropicals from their summer outdoor homes back into the warm shelter of Neil's greenhouse for winter. It's an annual process, and it will be finished up within the next week or so. Neil explains the ritual in this visit to the garden spaces that surround the Sperrys' home.

Texas Tree Tips

This month Steve Houser of Arborilogical Services offers the second in his series of articles on tree planting. Read his invaluable tips for selecting a healthy, well-formed tree.

But Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1:30 p.m., he'll be speaking and doing a book signing at the Antique Rose Emporium's big fall rose festival in Independence (near Brenham). On Saturday, Nov. 15, he'll be the featured speaker at The Gift of Adoption/Texas event, 6-9 p.m. And, you'll find him in all his usual places on the radio, in papers and online as well.

From the Magazine

You'll find the November/December 2014 issue of Neil Sperry's GARDENS magazine full of information, ranging from gifts for gardeners to plants that change color in winter! We share here a past article about sweet peas by Mary Wilhite of Blue Moon Gardens.
