Question: What types of herbicides can I use to keep weeds out of my perennial garden?

Answer: There are several that could be appropriate. There are pre-emergent weedkillers to prevent germination of crabgrass, grassburs and other annual grasses. Treatment should be made two weeks prior to the last killing freeze date and again 90 days later. You can spot-treat with glyphosates or similar materials to eliminate bermudagrass, Johnsongrass and other perennial weeds, but keep them off the foliage of desirable perennials. Specific nutsedge controls are labeled for use around certain types of perennials. Always read and follow label directions carefully, and ask a Certified Nursery Professional for specific advice for your weed problems.
