Question: I saw turk’s cap in a public garden. How well will it do for me, and how can I get it started?

Answer: Turk’s cap is a relative of hibiscus, and it thrives in Texas gardens. Give it full sun and ample room. The plants will grow to 5 feet tall and wide. It attracts hummingbirds to its rolled red flowers. Although the plants die to the ground with the first freeze, they come back strongly each spring. It has few if any pests. You’ll find it with native plant collections in specialty nurseries. More and more mainstream nurseries now offer it with their perennials as well.
