Question: Why are my pecans falling early (August, early September)? They have large black blotches on their husks, and they quickly turn black and watery.

Answer: That’s pecan scab, a fungal disease. It actually gets its start earlier in the growing season, usually by late May. You should include a fungicide with each late spring and summer spray you make for other issues, to help protect against this disease. The fallen pecans will be ruined. The disease is worse in late springs and early summers that have ongoing rain and high humidities.
