Question: What kind of fertilizer is best for my vegetables?

Answer: Have your soil tested every couple of years to monitor the levels of the various nutrients. Don’t be surprised, however, if the tests show that you need to add high-nitrogen or all-nitrogen fertilizers for the foreseeable future. That frequently happens in landscapes and gardens, and it’s difficult to convince yourself to add nitrogen to that vigorous tomato plant, when all you really want are the fruit that plant will produce. What the soil test may show you is that you already have ample (or even excessive) amounts of phosphorus and potassium in the soil. Trust the test.
