Question: I’d like to plant cabbage. Should I use transplants, or can I start seeds?

Answer: Cabbage is sensitive to hot, dry conditions of late spring, so it’s best to use the head start that potted transplants give you. Set them out 4 to 6 weeks prior to the average date of the last killing freeze in your area. Your fall crop should be planted 3 months prior to the first freeze of the fall. If early light frosts happen before you harvest the heads, however, they will survive and continue to develop. Harvest before a hard freeze.
