Question: How can I keep weeds out of my flower beds once I get things planted?

Answer: Use a 1- to 2-inch layer of shredded pine bark or other mulch. That will discourage most weeds, enough so that you’ll be able to cultivate the survivors with a small garden hoe. There are pre-emergent weedkillers that could help, but you’ll have to be certain that you’ll not be sowing seed anytime within 4 to 5 months after the treatment. You can also spot-treat with a contact herbicide by using either a small bottle sprayer or a foam rubber paint brush to apply the herbicide directly onto only the weeds.
