Question: Should I water my houseplants from below?

Answer: You can do that occasionally, but it’s not the best regular practice. When water is taken up from below, it fills all of the pore spaces. Oxygen, much needed by the plants’ roots, is driven from the soil. Mineral salts are pushed higher in the soil, rather than being leached out as they would be from top watering. However, if you have a really porous potting soil, such as you might have in a wire hanging basket, this may be the very best way of saturating the potting mix.
