Question: Is it a good idea to scalp our lawn?

Answer: Scalping is primarily an aesthetic endeavor. You'll remove the stubble left over by the winter so that the sun will warm the ground more efficiently. You'll see the new green growth of the spring several weeks earlier. You'll also remove many of the winter weeds in the process, most especially henbit. On the downside, scalping is a terribly messy task. Wear a quality respirator and goggles.
