Weeds are notorious water abusers. If you have landscape and garden beds that have filled with weeds from the spring rains you need to eliminate them immediately. Sharpen your hoe and spend an hour or two chopping them out. Follow that by applying 2 or 3 inches of mulch. Use a roll-type mulch for persistent types such as bermudagrass, then conceal the roll mulch with a 1- to 2-inch layer of bark mulch.

There are very effective weedkillers that will control almost any type of weed you may encounter. Some can even be used (with caution) near existing landscape plants. We keep detailed information on identifying the categories of weeds and selecting the most appropriate controls in our Most Asked Questions section of neilsperry.com.
