Important Note from Neil

Gardener, meet annual bluegrass, Poa annua. It’s the scourge of American landscapes and gardens. It grows in lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, groundcovers – it even survives quarter-inch mowing in golf greens.

The ONLY way to avoid annual bluegrass is to PREVENT IT with a pre-emergent herbicide. Apply Dimension or Halts granules the first 10 or 12 days of September, before its thousands of seeds start to germinate. You have to kill the seeds and tiny seedlings as they try to sprout.

Read and follow label directions. These materials can be used on any established lawn (after the grass has been through at least one winter), also around trees and shrubs. Water after the application to spread the active ingredient across the surface of the soil.

If you miss this application and then start seeing seedlings emerge, too bad. Your next time to deal with it will be early September 2013.

Treat now! Don’t blow it!
