One of the drawbacks of writing e-gardens from my place in North Texas is that I lag behind you South Texas pacesetters. Your redbuds have finished their season already. Nonetheless, it’s still a great time for planting, so my story is timeless.

Owner Danny Armstrong and I visited about how there seems to be a new type of redbud introduced every year – so many improvements in the past 25 years. Click through their many gorgeous photos on that linking page above to see what I mean.

Our friend Steven Chamblee has bought tons of plants from Danny and his folks over the past 6 or 7 years, and I can certainly see why. Thanks for their permission in allowing us to share this collection of varieties they offer.

I’ve driven by this old redbud several times a week for 47 years. It’s an eastern redbud, native to all of Collin County (and the eastern U.S. and Canada), so I’ve always assumed it just came up as a volunteer in this spot. From these humble beginnings breeders and plant collectors have brought us all the beautiful selections you see in the photos from The Home and Garden Center in Longview. Be sure you’ve clicked through to see them. Image clickable for larger view.
