Putting arches to work in gardens – by Diane Morey Sitton

Would your garden benefit from a focal point? Would you like to accent a gateway or frame a statue? Do you need more growing space for flowering vines or climbing vegetables?
A garden arch may be the answer.

Arches are a useful garden element whether installed at a strategic spot in the garden or constructed as part of a permanent wall or fence. All images by Diane Morey Sitton. Images clickable for larger views.

Although all arches share the same classic form, they are available in such a wide range of sizes, styles and materials that there’s an arch to complement almost any size and style of garden.

The ideas below explore some of the ways arches can be used in landscapes.

Surrounding a streetside arch with flowering plants adds to its welcome.

Highlight an entrance. When paired with a gate at a garden entrance or positioned over a path opening, arches say “Welcome.” Add to the impact by growing plants on either side of the arch. If a planting area isn’t available next to the arch at a streetside entrance, use plant-filled containers to increase the welcome.

Great arches make great neighbors. Beautiful from both sides, this impressive arch melds two gardens into one.

Define distinct zones. Arches denote changes in style, and they beckon with the promise of things to come. Use them to mark the transition from a sitting area to an open expanse, from a patio to a vegetable patch, or from a kid’s play area to a woodsy retreat.

Showcase climbing plants. Arches not only provide the framework for bloom-covered focal points, they provide growing space for edibles (especially useful in small gardens.) Smother arches with annual and perennial flowering vines (clematis, morning glory, hyacinth bean), roses or vining vegetables, such as cucumbers and pole beans, to name a few. Opt for a lattice-type design which will help support the plants as they grow skyward.

Draw attention to garden features. Arches draw the eye when positioned over sculptures, fountains or other distinct garden features. When used to frame stunning views, arches focus the eye into the distance, thus opening up gardens and creating a sense of space.

Even simple arches denote changes and beckon with the promise of things to come.

Reinforce garden style. Arches are style setters. Models range from the swirls, finials and other embellishments of Victorian elegance to the boldness of Romanesque design. Materials range from wrought iron (a classic choice) to copper with its unmatched patina. Wood arches are available in simple and complex styles. Wood lends a natural look to landscapes.

Make a backdrop. Create an enchanting evening backdrop by weaving string lights throughout an arch’s framework. Likewise, transform a dreary garage wall into a beautiful background by installing an arch against the wall, covering it with a flowering vine, and using it to support a hanging basket or to frame a statue or wall fountain.
