Question: My Bradford pear died very suddenly this summer. What might have caused it?

Answer: Probably cotton root rot. There is no chemical control for this soil-borne fungus other than to apply a sulfur soil acidifier as a preventive, and that won’t stop it once it shows up. For the record, cotton root rot is not a problem in acidic soils.
