Question: Our crabapple tree died very suddenly. The whole tree died at once. What was the problem?

Answer: Usually cotton root rot. The soil-borne fungus has no more favorite host than apples and their kin. Avoid susceptible species when you replant, and stay away from crabapples in your area in the future.
