Answer: Crabgrass and grassburs are both warm-season grassy weeds that germinate in early spring through the summer. You can prevent their germination by applying pre-emergent weedkiller granules in early spring and again in early summer. The precise times will vary with location in Texas. Late February and late May in South Texas. Early March and early June in Central Texas, mid-March in North Texas, and late March in the Panhandle. (Each of these dates is 1-2 weeks prior to the average date of your area’s last killing freeze.) Once the seeds germinate, you will not get control with the granules. There currently is no effective post-emergent herbicide to eliminate existing plants.
