Question: My flowering kale plants look terrible. They were so beautiful until the hard freeze. Aren’t they supposed to take the winter?
Answer: Some of the fancy newer hybrid types are less cold-hardy than the older, plainer types. When they freeze, they pretty much look like boiled cabbage. At that point you have no choice but to replace them. You might try growing them in containers, so you could shuttle them into the garage when it’s going to be really cold. You could also try one of the frost cloth covers for several degrees of added winter protection.
