Question: I really have enjoyed my firebush. Are they actually shrubs? They look more like tender annual plants.

Answer: Firebush (Hamelia patens) is root-hardy along the Gulf Coast. In the northern two-thirds of Texas, however, it’s far better used strictly as an annual, much as we do copper plants.
