Question: I understand that hollies are some of the best screens. How far apart should I plant them to get good privacy? How long will it take?

Answer: The best types include Nellie R. Stevens, yaupon, burford and willowleaf (needlepoint) hollies. Know the height to which you’re going to allow it to grow, then plant the hollies two-thirds as far apart as they are tall. If you crowd them closer together, you’ll pay the price later, as they shade themselves out and begin losing their lower limbs. Be sure they’re dense and full when you plant them, then keep their growing shoots pruned back lightly to encourage side branching.
