Answer: Any stems you trim should be cut completely back to the ground. Each cut stem will send out several new shoots, and this trimming will keep the plants full and attractive. Remove one-third to one-half of the total number of stems late each winter. That way you’ll entirely replenish the growth every two to three years. Note that nana nandinas are not trimmed in this manner. You must selectively remove unwanted stems with them, but you should minimize trimming since they are not strong growers.
