Question: I like carnations, but most of the types I have tried seemed to “melt away” with the heat. Is that normal?
Answer: Absolutely. In fact, that’s why no greenhouse growers produce cutflower carnations in Texas. It’s just too warm. There are two or three types of carnations and the related garden pinks that will come back fairly reliably, but only when they’re given perfect drainage, morning sun with a little protection from the afternoon heat and great garden soil. Your local independent retail garden center will be able to steer you toward the best types.
