Question: If I’d like a really pretty lawn, should I consider “Tif” bermuda?

Answer: The term “Tif” refers to the origin of that particular group of grasses from the U.S.D.A. breeding program in Tifton, Georgia. These dwarf hybrid bermudas (the more proper term for them as a group) were bred to be used on golf courses and athletic fields. They’re the ultimate in picture-perfect turf, but only if you give them the frequent maintenance they require. Tifgreen (more commonly known as “328”) requires almost daily mowing with a golf green reel mower. You’ll need to maintain it at less than 1/4-inch height. Tifway (“419”) is a more manageable grass that can be kept at 3/4-inch to 1 inch height. There are other dwarf hybrids as well, but be certain you don’t mind that added maintenance.
