Question: My live oak has rows of holes in its trunk. It looks like someone has fired on it with a machine gun. Is it borers?

Answer: No. It’s the work of woodpecker relatives, sapsuckers. They feed on the sap flow and, essentially, do no real damage to the tree. Put some type of sticky repellent on the trunk to discourage their activity.
