Question: My chrysanthemums bloom in the spring. I thought they were fall flowers only.
Answer: Mums bloom when the nights are a certain length. Those lengths of darkness occur in the fall, but they also occur in the spring. Those spring flowers can be pretty for a few weeks, but they can get in the way of vigorous stem growth and great bud set for the fall flowering. Trim them off by early June, so the plants can get on with their growth. Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer immediately after you prune them.
