Question: My fall asters are tall and lanky as they bloom. Should I stake them?

Answer: You can if you need to, but only on a one-time basis. What you really need to do is “pinch” them lightly in late May, to make them branch out and remain more compact. It’s amazing how that one light pruning really keeps them more compact.
