Question: My mums are finished blooming. Should I prune them to get rid of all the dead stems?

Answer: Yes. In fact, if you look closely near the ground, you’ll see new basal shoots starting to develop. Those will be the stems for next year. Cut the old stalks back within 1 to 2 inches of those new shoots soon after they finish flowering in the fall.
