Question: I notice at the ballparks that the grass seems to have a grain? How does that happen?
Answer: It’s all determined by the direction of the mowers. Curiously, there are some important messages to be learned from their turf examples. Mow in different directions every time that you mow so that your grass won’t develop its own grain, or “lean” of the blades. If you mow consistently in the same direction, the grass will lay down and your mower eventually won’t cut the grass at the proper height. Also, the ballpark professionals mow twice each time that they mow. They make their cuts at right angles to each other, giving that checkerboard appearance. That can really make your lawn look nice, too, plus it will grind up each and every clipping.
