Question: I’ve seen holes in rows around the trunk of my pecan. Is that borers?
Answer: No. It’s “damage” done by a sapsucker. That’s a relative of woodpeckers. Its activity does not indicate any particular insect problem within the tree. It normally comes back later to feed on the sap that flows from the holes. Rarely, if ever, will you see any serious damage done to a tree by this interesting bird. You can use a sticky product such as Tree Tanglefoot to discourage its activity.
