Question: Should I spray for the webworms in our pecan?

Answer: Many general-purpose insecticides will control webworms, but include one or two drops of a liquid household detergent with the spray to help it penetrate into the webs. You’ll need a power sprayer to reach the tops of the tree. You might find it easier to buy a pole pruner and merely nip the webs off the tips of the branches as they get started. They will not kill the tree or even the individual limbs. You’ll see tent caterpillars in late spring and fall webworms in late August and September. Walnut caterpillars will do similar damage, but they won’t form the webs. You’ll sometimes see them en masse on bare branches.
