Question: My sweet gum has some kind of bad growth on its twigs. There are two rows on every branch. Is that some kind of scale?

Answer: Those are the corky wings that several of our good landscape plants happen to have. It’s a normal part of the bark growth. It’s absolutely natural for sweet gums, burning bush (or “winged”) euonymus, winged elms and others.
