Answer: Your county Extension office maintains a list of the best types for your part of Texas. Flavor and disease resistance are two important criteria. Nut size is important, but should not be your prime concern. Often the larger-fruiting types are productive when they’re young, but then fail to fill their kernels reliably when the trees get larger. For the more humid eastern half of the state you should include Caddo. It is one of the most disease-resistant varieties of all. Other good choices include Desirable, Kiowa and Cheyenne. For drier western areas choose from Cheyenne, Sioux, Western and Wichita, among others.
