Question: What can I do if I have a valuable container that I’d like to use for a flower pot, but I absolutely cannot drill a hole in it?
Answer: “Double pot” the plant. Grow it in a conventional pot with a drain hole. Nestle that pot down inside the larger decorative container. Use bark mulch, potting soil, Spanish moss, sphagnum moss or some other cushioning material between the two pot walls. Every time that you want to water the plant, lift it out. Water it thoroughly, then let the excess water drain away before you return it to the outer container. Do not try to do this double-potting with plants that are outdoors, since rainfall would quickly fill the pots.
