Question: What is the best way to fertilize our shrubs?
Answer: You can usually do it at the same time that you’re feeding the grass, since both groups of plants will be growing actively at those times. If it’s convenient, and if the bed is fairly narrow, enough of the lawn food may actually carry into the shrub beds that you won’t need anything else. Otherwise, distribute 1 to 2 pounds of a quality lawn food per 100 square feet of bed space. You can use a hand-held spreader, or you can sprinkle it by hand. Just try to apply it evenly across the entire area. If any catches on the foliage, shake the plants vigorously to cause it to tumble to the soil. Water deeply immediately after you fertilize.
