Question: What makes the tiny holes in the trunk of my silver maple? They’re scattered all over the trunk.

Answer: Red-headed wood borers seem to like silver maples a great deal. They look like yellow jackets with burgundy heads. They’re about two-thirds the size of yellow jackets. Control them with a borer preventive spray on 6-week intervals during the growing season, most especially when you see the adults flying near the tree.
