Question: What mowing heights are best? My grass doesn’t look good after I mow it.
Answer: For spreading grasses with stolons (“runners”), closer mowing encourages thicker turf. With that in mind, optimum heights for season-long mowing would be: bermuda (1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch); hybrid bermudas (less than 1 inch, some less than 1/2-inch); St. Augustine (2 to 3 inches); zoysias (1 to 2 inches, depending on variety); fescue (2 to 3 inches); buffalograss (2 to 3 inches); and centipede (1-1/2 to 2 inches).
