Question: What size of transplant works best for annual flowers?
Answer: You’ll find 4-inch and even 6-inch potted transplants. These are plants that are half-grown (or more) and that look good the day they’re set out. That’s the whole principle behind the “change-out” at amusement parks and botanic gardens, where the beds look almost as good the day after the new plants are planted as they will when they mature. However, if your budget is tight, consider smaller potted transplants. You’ll have to be careful that they don’t dry out on hot or windy days until they get rooted in sufficiently.
