Answer: That depends on the type of perennial you’re planting. As a general rule of thumb, however, plants that bloom in the spring are usually transplanted in the fall. Plants that flower in the fall are usually moved in early spring. Nurseries have excellent selections in the spring, and more and more nurseries are also well stocked in the other months as well. If at all possible, buy from local sources. National mailorder and online sources are great supplements for the little-known and unusual varieties.
