Question: Which types of palms are the most winter-hardy?

Answer: The best of the common types include windmill palm, California fan palm and the sabal palmettos. Each of these will be winter-hardy to Zone 7, which means they should survive most winters to the Red River. Palm hardiness, however, also depends on satisfactory “hardening, ” or prior conditioning, as well as the length and severity of the cold spell. Your local nurseryman can give you more precise information.
