How to make your conversation area the talk of the town – by Diane Morey Sitton
Who doesn’t remember the conversation pits of the 1960’s – 1970s, those sunken indoor hubs where socializing took place amid shag carpet and lava lamps. Today, more than ever, gardeners have moved socializing outdoors, transforming backyards, patios, pool decks and various nooks and crannies into inviting places to congregate.

The good news, unlike the conversation craze of the 1960’s, you don’t need to dig a recessed pit when designing a place to congregate in your garden. If you envision a soothing Zen-like retreat, select a quiet corner; if you want to entertain, position the conversation area on an open patio where folks can easily come and go; if you want to bask in flowers, surround the site with planter boxes filled with seasonal blooms. If privacy is your thing, enclose the area with hedges or install backdrops of vine –covered trellises.
Typically, conversation areas feature a circular seating arrangement anchored with a central focal point. The circular configuration makes it easy for folks to share stories, opinions, jokes and jibes. A fire pit, coffee table, low planter box, or water feature used as a center point suggests a natural gathering spot, helping to draw folks into the setting.

Furnish the site with comfortable seating. Opt for teak, aluminum, synthetic wicker or other durable, low-maintenance material. Modular units and stackable chairs can be moved and combined as needed.
Add to the comfort with cozy outdoor cushions and throw pillows. Choose washable, weather-resistant fabrics. Set a theme by coordinating colors. Include side tables for drinks and snacks; add an ottoman that doubles as seating and storage for throws and lightweight blankets. Define the space and create a unified, room-like vibe with an outdoor rug.
In the evening, increase the ambience with lighting. Install outdoor sconces. Create a warm glow with candles and lanterns. Add a festive mood with string lights.
A garden setting, comfortable furnishings, cozy throws, the glow of lanterns and the twinkle of stars: today’s conversation “pits” are a far cry from the shag carpets and lava lamps of yesteryear.
Who wouldn’t want to linger and soak in the ambience while sharing a conversation with family and friends!
